Why Dowry Free Campaign ?
Even though Dowry is illegal by law and religion it is treated as part of religious and cultural custom in our society. Dowry is damaging the total economy of the family here and its reaching the pinnacle as families loosing their own houses they live.
In our village, Nilambur, 15 dowry marriages are conducted in a week in small income families. 1lakh Rupees and 20 soverign of gold is the minimum dowry which comes to 3lakh Rupees. Where as, these families are raising this money by mortgaging their houses in the banks or going to private money lenders. 15 marriages in a week means 45lakhs Rupees is the debt overflowing in the society. In a year it’s coming to 24 Crores of Rupees. This is the story of a single Village panchayath.
